Exploring Maps and World Mountains is divided into two parts (corresponding to Unit 1 and Unit 2 for schools using the CKHG series in Sequence grade-level order). The first past explains geographical terms and concepts to help students use maps and globes effectively, including map symbols, keys, scales, and longitude and latitude. Students also learn about time zones, maps depicting elevation and depression, and the relationship between a three-dimensional globe and flat map. The second part of this book reinforces map skills while introducing major mountains and mountain ranges. Students explore the Himalayas and Urals in Asia; the Atlas Mountains in Africa; the Andes in South America; the Appalachians and Rockies in North America; and the Alps and Caucasus in Europe. Students also study the tallest mountains on each continent.

  • For Language Arts: You can also use CKHG to integrate content-rich nonfiction into your Reading/Language Arts lessons. CKHG objectives are correlated with the Common Core English Language Arts standards, which call for increased reading of nonfiction informational texts.
