1. Our commitment to accessibility
The Core Knowledge Foundation is committed to making its websites and digital educational resources accessible to as many people as possible, including people with disabilities.
Our websites support educators, families, librarians, students and other members of the public in discovering and using educational materials. We believe that people should be able to access this information and these resources regardless of their abilities, the devices they use or the ways they navigate the web.
We aim to identify and remove barriers to access, improve the usability of our digital services, and incorporate accessibility into our website design, development, content creation and ongoing maintenance.
2. Scope
This policy applies to the following websites operated by the Core Knowledge Foundation:
- Core Knowledge Foundation: https://www.coreknowledge.org/
- Core Knowledge Free Library: https://www.coreknowledgefreelibrary.org/
- Core Knowledge Digital Resources: https://www.coreknowledgedigitals.org/
The policy covers website pages, navigation, search, forms, digital educational resources, downloadable materials and other content or functionality provided through these websites, to the extent applicable.
Some content and services may be supplied by third parties or hosted on external platforms. Where these are used, we will seek to identify accessibility barriers and provide information about alternative ways to access relevant content where reasonably practicable.
3. Accessibility standard
We use the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), as our principal reference for web accessibility.
Our target is WCAG 2.2 Level AA, subject to the requirements applicable to each website and the findings of accessibility assessments.
These guidelines address four broad principles:
- Perceivable: Information and interface elements should be presented in ways users can perceive, including through appropriate text alternatives, captions and sufficient contrast.
- Operable: Users should be able to navigate and interact with the website using different input methods, including a keyboard.
- Understandable: Content, navigation and interactions should be clear and predictable.
- Robust: Content should work reliably with a range of browsers, devices and assistive technologies.
We will assess accessibility against the relevant criteria and prioritise improvements according to their impact on users.
4. Accessibility in practice
Our accessibility work may include:
- Providing meaningful alternative text for informative images.
- Maintaining a clear heading structure and logical reading order.
- Supporting keyboard navigation and visible focus indicators.
- Using sufficient colour contrast and avoiding reliance on colour alone to convey information.
- Providing clear labels, instructions and error messages for forms.
- Supporting text resizing and responsive layouts.
- Providing captions or transcripts for relevant audio and video content, where applicable.
- Improving the accessibility of downloadable documents and educational resources.
- Testing search, navigation, account features and interactive learning tools.
- Considering compatibility with screen readers and other assistive technologies.
We recognise that accessibility is an ongoing process. The availability of an accessibility feature or a successful automated test does not, by itself, establish that a website fully conforms to WCAG.
5. Different websites and known limitations
The three websites have different purposes, content and technical features. Their accessibility status may therefore differ.
We will assess and communicate the status of each website separately rather than assume that improvements to one site establish accessibility across all three.
Where an accessibility assessment identifies barriers, we will seek to prioritise and address them. Where a barrier cannot be resolved immediately, we will consider reasonable alternatives to help users access the relevant information or resource.
Known limitations and available alternatives should be described in the accessibility statement for the affected website, based on current assessment findings.
6. Third-party content and downloadable resources
Some content may be provided through third-party platforms or may have been created before current accessibility practices were established.
This can include embedded media, externally hosted services, PDF documents, scanned publications, historical educational materials and other downloadable resources.
We will consider accessibility when creating or updating content and, where practicable, provide accessible alternatives or guidance when an existing resource presents a barrier.
The accessibility of a third-party service may depend on the provider’s technology and practices. We will seek to identify material barriers that affect users of our websites.
7. Reporting an accessibility problem
We welcome feedback from people who encounter accessibility barriers on any of our websites.
If you cannot access a page, locate a resource, complete a form or use a website feature, please contact us and tell us:
- Which website you were using.
- The page or resource involved, including its URL if possible.
- What you were trying to do and the difficulty you encountered.
- Any assistive technology, browser or device details you wish to share.
Please do not include sensitive personal information in your report.

We aim to acknowledge accessibility enquiries within [insert realistic response period] and will make reasonable efforts to help users access the information or resources they need.
8. Review and improvement
We will review this policy periodically and when significant changes are made to our websites or digital services.
Accessibility assessments may include automated testing, manual checks, keyboard-only testing, assistive technology testing and feedback from people with disabilities.
We will use the findings to prioritise improvements and inform future website development and content publishing.
