American Ethnicity: A Sense of Commonality

By E.D. Hirsch, Jr.

Thirty-five years after the publication of his seminal work, Cultural Literacy, E.D. Hirsch issues an urgent call to action by teachers, parents, legislators  -  anyone concerned with the future of America - in his newest publication.

The essential document for any Core Knowledge teacher or school, the Core Knowledge Sequence is intended to help children establish strong foundations of knowledge grade by grade from preschool through grade 8. The latest edition of the Sequence (revised 2023) is available as a free download at this time.

For grades K-8, the Core Knowledge Sequence is organized by grade level and, within each grade, by subject, providing a detailed outline of specific content and skills to be taught in language arts, history, geography, mathematics, science, visual arts, and music.

For children from 3 to 5 years of age, the Core Knowledge Preschool Sequence describes fundamental competencies and specific knowledge that provide coherent foundations for later learning in kindergarten and beyond.

The print version of the Core Knowledge Sequence is designed as a “tumbled” book. Guidelines for Grades K-8 are available on one side; flip the book over for Preschool Content Guidelines.

The content specified in the Sequence complements the general skills and objectives typically found in state and local curriculum guides. An introductory essay discusses the research and consensus-building efforts behind the Sequence and describes the basic steps of implementing a Core Knowledge school program.
