The Teacher Guide lays out the sequential aspects of classroom study and contains a wealth of information necessary for a complete unit of study. Each lesson is divided into parts, and each lesson part requires thirty to forty-five minutes of instruction time. The time it takes to complete a full lesson depends on class size and individual circumstances.

 

PLEASE NOTE: An error on page 17 regarding safety for the students was not found at the time of printing. The third bullet should read: “they should ask an adult to plug devices in for them.” 

 

Within the Teacher Guide, each segment concludes with a Check for Understanding, providing the teacher with a quick opportunity for formative assessment. At the end of this unit Introduction, you will find a blank Pacing Guide, which you may use to plan how you might pace the lessons. We strongly recommend that you preview the unit in full before beginning instruction. This will help you prepare your pacing guide before teaching the first lesson.

 

The unit Computers All Around Is provides students the opportunity to explore concepts that include the following:

  • What are electronic devices?
  • What is a computer?
  • How is a laptop different from a desktop computer?
  • What is an app?
  • What can a smartphone do?
  • What is a mouse? What is a controller?
  • How can we tell a computer what to do?

CKSci is informed by the NGSS, which encourages student learning through hands-on activities and collecting data. This activity-centered approach requires, at times, that schools collect or purchase materials and equipment that will be needed to complete activities.
