Metabolic Reactions introduces Grade 7 students to the metabolic processes that take place inside out bodies, and the nature of the chemicals we need to live and function properly. The subtitle of the unit is: How do things inside our bodies work together to make us feel the way we do? The Student Reader is the integrated science literacy component of the unit. In the Student Reader students will learn body weight and what is happening as our weight goes up or down, the biotic nature of the human digestive system, the anatomy of a cow’s gut as it related to food processing, lactose and the human diet, and more. Student Readers focus on aspects of science literacy, including factual articles, history of the sciences, art and literature, spotting bad science in the media and advertisements, graphics comprehension, research-type articles, reliability of sources, and other areas of science literacy.
