Building on the use of devices established in the previous grade, the goal of the instruction and cumulative experiences in this unit is for young students to continue using with, increasing independence, computer devices for various purposes, including game play, communication, and schoolwork. With increasing practice in successfully inputting information, students can consider ways to achieve creative outputs that use and combine text, graphics, visual data displays, photos, animations, video, and audio.

First grade children often know how to use computers for some aspects of work and play. This unit systematically walks students though and even deeper look at how they can employ the strength of computer use. Learners also confront computers that are not behaving correctly and see how to recognize the problems and consider fixes. Kids also learn about passwords, data, step-by-step instructions. They come to understand some basics of what coding is, and what loops and sequences are.

Using Computers introduces Grade 2 students to real-world examples and fundamental concepts related to devices that utilize computer technology. This unit can be integrated into your existing science or math curriculum. The lessons can be inserted intermittently, or the entire unit can be taught on consecutive days. The unit can also be offered as an enrichment course.
