When only a young child, Helen lost her sight and her hearing. But she was not going to let this tragedy hold her back. Thanks to her closest companion and teacher, Anne (Annie) Mansfield Sullivan, Helen Keller overcame all obstacles that came her way. She learned to read and write; to speak; she attended college, and she even flew a plane. Helen dedicated her life to improving conditions for disenfranchised people.
