Chemical Reactions and Energy introduces Grade 7 students to chemical reactions and the role of energy in both endothermic and exothermic reactions. The subtitle of the unit is: How can use chemical reactions to design a solution to a problem? The Student Reader is the integrated science literacy component of the unit. In the Student Reader students will examine the energy involved in meals that can be heated by chemical reactions, winter clothing and hand warmers, ice changes cause by physical and chemical means, engineering for heating designs, engineering in poetry, and more. Student Readers focus on aspects of science literacy, including factual articles, history of the sciences, art and literature, spotting bad science in the media and advertisements, graphics comprehension, research-type articles, reliability of sources, and other areas of science literacy.
