World Deserts strengthens map skills and geographical knowledge through the exploration of the many and varied deserts which exist on our planet.

For each reader, a Teacher Guide and Timeline Cards are separately available. All materials may be downloaded and previewed in their entirety.


World Deserts uses maps and globes to show location and other aspects of geography to explore the world’s great deserts. Students will explore the characteristics of desert landscapes and life forms, with a focus on the Sahara and Kalahari in Africa; the Outback of Australia; the Gobi in Asia;  the Mojave, Sonoran, and Chihuahuan in North America; and the Atacama in South America. Students also study people who live in deserts, such as the San people of southern Africa and the indigenous peoples of the Australian Outback.

  • For Language Arts: You can also use CKHG to integrate content-rich nonfiction into your Reading/Language Arts lessons. CKHG objectives are correlated with the Common Core English Language Arts standards, which call for increased reading of nonfiction informational texts.
