In this unit, Learning About Science, Grade 2 children continue their examination of what it means to be scientifically literate. Students in Grade 2 focus on analyzing and interpreting data, designing effective solutions to problems, structure and function–and the importance of science for our schools, towns, and society. Students examine the interface of science with all aspects of human learning, such as art, history, biography, mathematics, music, philosophy, and literature. This unit will help students understand that science grows, and that science is a human endeavor that is connected to all aspects of private and social living.

The Learning About Science unit draws upon the science content presented in the Grade 2 Core Knowledge unit offerings. Focusing on reading comprehension, recognizing science concepts, and making connections from chapter contents students become familiar with such concepts as:

• What is a theory?
• What is scientific evidence?
• How can numbers show patterns in nature?
• Arguing with evidence and reason.
• How are structure and function related?

These important concepts are tied to other aspects of human knowledge and endeavors such as science careers, history of architectural engineering, models used for communicating, troubleshooting skills, art, and the process of problem solving.  Core Knowledge Foundation is committed to a broad view of the term science literacy and to curricula that fosters science literacy in students incrementally over time.
