Chemical Reactions and Matter introduces Grade 7 students to the chemical reactions as it related to changes that happen to matter under certain conditions. The subtitle of the unit is: How we make something new that wasn’t there before? The Student Reader is the integrated science literacy component of the unit. In the Student Reader students will examine how we sense different states of matter, chemicals in nature we often overlook, change that occur in water, kitchen chemistry, atomic theory, and more. Student Readers focus on aspects of science literacy, including factual articles, history of the sciences, art and literature, spotting bad science in the media and advertisements, graphics comprehension, research-type articles, reliability of sources, and other areas of science literacy.
