Visual Arts

The Core Knowledge Visual Arts (CKVA) program focuses on important elements of making and appreciating art, emphasizing important artists, works of art, and artistic concepts.

In the CKVA curriculum, students in K–8 are exposed to both classic and contemporary works of Art and famous architecture from around the world. Students learn about the elements of art through study and creating their own works of art.

Visual Arts Curriculum Components

  • The Student Activity Books are used to enhance students’ understanding of the elements of art, as well as giving them the opportunity to explore their own creativity.  There are color reproductions of the works of art studied in each grade at the back of the Student Activity Books.
  • The Teacher Guide consists of individual lessons that provide background information, instructional guidelines and notes, and guidance for student activities.
  • The Online Resources provides additional links to other instructional and professional learning resources that are accessible online.
  • The Slide Deck consists of PowerPoint slides showing images of each artwork, enabling the teacher to display them to the class for artistic exploration and discussion.
