In this grade level, the emphasis begins to shift from examination—figuring out how instructions make computing devices do what they do—to the creative application of that knowledge. Students step forward from the role of computer technology user into a beginning maker role. Students begin to use functional computer language to craft code for executable tasks. This gives students practical experience in computer programming, which is a solid foundation for middle school computer programming classes.

This unit leads students through the conceptual basis of computers and computer systems, which lets them design computer programs themselves. The importance of being part of a successful team, achieving smooth collaboration is part of the milieu of successful computer work. Students identify computer commands, execute coding fundamentals and, importantly, design, test, and revise a computer programming project.

The Designing Computer Programs Student Reader includes ten chapters and a student Glossary providing definitions of Core Vocabulary words. Student Readers include a feature called Word to Know, which provides background information to help students understand key terms, and may sometimes include additional informational boxes, such as Think About.
