Problem-Solving and Computers: CKSci Teacher Guide

$34.95

The Teacher Guide lays out the sequential aspects of classroom study and contains a wealth of information necessary for a complete unit of study. Each lesson is divided into parts, and each lesson part requires thirty to forty-five minutes of instruction time. The time it takes to complete a full lesson depends on class size and individual circumstances.

Within the Teacher Guide, each segment concludes with a Check for Understanding, providing the teacher with a quick opportunity for formative assessment. At the end of this unit Introduction, you will find a blank Pacing Guide, which you may use to plan how you might pace the lessons. We strongly recommend that you preview the unit in full before beginning instruction. This will help you prepare your pacing guide before teaching the first lesson.

The unit Problem-Solving and Computers provides students the opportunity to explore concepts that include the following:

  • Why must all components of a system work for the entire system to work?
  • What are troubleshooting strategies?
  • How can computer networks help us solve problems?
  • How do we remain safe on the internet?
  • What is a binary code, a binary digit, and a bit?
  • What are the ways in which we can collect and organize data?
  • What are the advantages of teamwork when using computers?
  • Can we analyze and decompose a process?
  • What are the rights and responsibilities of a computer programmer?
  • How do we create and interpret a timeline?

CKSci is informed by the NGSS, which encourages student learning through hands-on activities and collecting data. This activity-centered approach requires, at times, that schools collect or purchase materials and equipment that will be needed to complete activities.
