Sound Waves introduces Grade 8 students to sound waves and sound. They investigate the source of sounds from vibrating objects, the nature of sound waves, and how we translate wave energy into hearing. The subtitle of the unit is: How can a sound make something move? The Student Reader is the integrated science literacy component of the unit. In the Student Reader students will learn musical instruments and the generation of a sound wave by various forms of vibrations, sounds in the world of animals, compression waves involved in huge wind turbines and their effects on human living, noise pollution, and more. Student Readers focus on aspects of science literacy, including factual articles, history of the sciences, art and literature, spotting bad science in the media and advertisements, graphics comprehension, research-type articles, reliability of sources, and other areas of science literacy.
CKSci Middle School is an enhanced republication of the OpenSciEd Middle School project–with a unique, integrated Core Knowledge science literacy component.
