CK Visual Arts: Grade 6
Focus:
Grade 6 CKVA consists of 6 units. In Art and Architecture: Ancient Greece and Rome, the main idea is that ancient Greek and Roman cultures strove for excellence in art, architecture and thought, Students will learn about the artistic features and purposes of the Parthenon and Pantheon, and famous paintings and sculptures of the time.
In Gothic Art and Architecture, students learn about the ornate decorative elements and designs throughout Gothic architecture and art, as well as the challenges architects overcame to allow more light and create a sense of grandiosity.
The Rococo Art unit’s main idea is that Rococo art was a reaction to the heavier, more church-centered subjects and themes of the baroque period; it developed in France in the eighteenth century.
Whereas in the Neoclassical, Romantic, and Realist Art unit, the massive economic and political changes in the mid-eighteenth to the late nineteenth centuries sent artists back to classical antiquity. This will teach students how this then led to the return to human imagination, and the power of emotion in the Age of Enlightenment, and then through depictions of the stark economic inequalities that followed.
In the Impressionism and Postimpressionism unit, students learn about art’s movement from impressionism to postimpressionism. The main idea here is that Impressionism was a reaction to the more static art of Realism and sought to capture the rapid motion of daily life brought on by the industrial era. Impressionist painters often painted outdoors and focused on quick works that captured the passing sunlight, where postimpressionists experimented with abstraction and themes and forms that were more symbolic.
The final unit, Architecture of the Industrial Revolution, focuses on the Industrial Revolution’s impact on architecture and design, as architecture and design became more streamlined and incorporated new materials like steel, iron, and glass. Architects built new structures, such as warehouses, factories, and infrastructure to support a moving society, and monuments like the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower.
