CKLA Unit 8: Native Americans
Focus:
Students will explore how the policies of the American government in the 1800s and the contact between Native Americans and settlers, missionaries, traders, and explorers adversely affected Native American traditions, cultures, ways of life, and relationship with the land. The unit presents information about diverse Native American tribes and nations with unique identities and cultures, including their specific regions and the geography of those regions. The unit reveals the unique role Native Americans played during World War II, and the struggle to transmit and preserve the diverse languages spoken by Native Americans. This unit also provides explicit instruction in reading, writing, morphology, grammar, and spelling.
