CKHG Unit 9: Early Presidents
NOTE: The resources for this unit are in the first part of Early Presidents and Social Reformers.
Focus:
This unit focuses on the first seven presidents of the United States: George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, and Andrew Jackson. Students learn how these presidents organized the federal government within the framework of the Constitution, saw to the building of a national capital, directed a second war with Great Britain, more than doubled the size of the country, and formulated a “hands-off” foreign policy in the Western Hemisphere. As students learn how our early presidents set precedents for the future of the new nation, they also consider different visions of how the nation and its government should evolve. Some of the content of this unit is tied to the “Pathway to Citizenship,” an array of civics-focused knowledge, questions, and activities.
