Core Knowledge is delighted to announce the newest additions to its popular CKHG™ series. Two new units for Grades K−2 will soon be available for free download. The units are Grade 1, Lessons in Civics, and Grade 2, Lessons in Economics. The Lessons in Civics Student Book consists of eight chapters. The Lessons in Economics Student Book consists of seven chapters. Both student books are intended to be read aloud by the teacher as the students look at the images.

Each CKHG Civics & Economics K2 unit includes the following:

  • The new Student Books are also a larger format, with colorful, illustrative pages, and informative text.

  • The Teacher Guides include detailed lesson plans, activity page masters, additional activities, and assessments.
  • The Big Idea in Grade 1 Lessons in Civics is — everyone is part of at least one community. Students will explore the ideas of community, rules, and citizenship as an introduction to civic principles and participation.
  • The Big Idea in Grade 2 Lesson in Economics is — every day we use goods and services. Students will learn the basics of economics, including goods and services, consumers and producers, resources, choices, and trade.

A Special Note about Grade 1 Lessons in Civics and Lessons in Economics in relation to Educating for American Democracy

In 2021, the Educating for American Democracy (EAD) consortium released a Roadmap for American Democracy. The Roadmap is an effort to encourage and bolster history and civics instruction in K–12 education. We have therefore included in this Civics and American Government unit content related to EAD’s Roadmap for American Democracy and the Roadmap’s driving questions for this grade. This content is readily distinguished by an American flag icon. The specific knowledge, questions, and activities identified by this icon denote opportunities to engage students and deepen their understanding of what it means to be a citizen.
