The following are FAQs that we have received from our parents and guardians that are using Core Knowledge materials in a homeschool setting.

How do I purchase Core Knowledge homeschool sets?

The Core Knowledge Foundation has created homeschool bundles for our  K–6 Core Knowledge History & Geography (CKHG) program and  K–5 Core Knowledge Science (CKSci) program. (Please note that five K–2 titles, “Our Five Senses,” “Simple Machines,” “Human Body Systems,” “Electricity and Magnetism,” and “Human Cells and Digestion,”  will not be available for purchase until early winter 2021.)

Our publishing partner, Amplify, is the sole source of Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) PreK–5 materials.  Amplify has made these materials available as homeschool kits.  Please note that on the Amplify bookstore, these are called “single student kits.” An Amplify representative would be able to explain what materials come with each grade-level single student kit. If you are interested in purchasing the program, you can reach an Amplify representative by calling 800-823-1969 or emailing [email protected].

What does CKLA address? How do I access materials?

The information below can support you with preparing to teach Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA)  in a homeschool setting:

About CKLA

CKLA is a comprehensive ELA program explicitly teaches both reading and writing skills. The K–3 program is comprised of two separate strands of instruction for Skills and Listening and Learning:

    • The Skills Strand is phonics-based and has readers for students that are 100% decodable based on the sounds they learn.  In Kindergarten, children are explicitly taught how to form letters as they learn the (most common) sounds each letter makes.  To learn more about the Skills strand, please review this overview.
    • The Listening and Learning Strand engages students in read-alouds that are fiction and non-fiction based to build background knowledge, vocabulary, and language skills. You can access an overview of this strand here.

Accessing CKLA materials

You can download and peruse the entire K–5 CKLA program through the Core Knowledge Foundation website.  If you are interested in purchasing CKLA homeschool sets, please contact our publishing partner, Amplify. Please note that on the Amplify bookstore, these are called “single student kits.” An Amplify representative would be able to explain what materials come with each grade-level single student kit. If you are interested in purchasing the program, you can reach an Amplify representative by calling 800-823-1969 or emailing [email protected].

What is the difference between the 1st edition of CKLA (posted on the CKF site) and the 2nd edition (sold through Amplify)?

The 1st edition CKLA materials for grades 3-5 , which are offered for free download on CKF website, differ from the 2nd print materials that Amplify sells.   The 2nd edition comes with various upgrades, but both versions address all of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) designated for the specific grade.  Families can use either edition to support their child/children with meeting these expectations.  Below, we highlight some key differences between the two, but you may wish to also reach out to Amplify to learn more about the 2nd edition before making your decision.

Differences

  • Grade 3: The version sold by Amplify combines the Listening/Learning and Skills units into a single strand.  While the content and skills addressed are fairly similar, some of the stories and activities were modified to fit into this new design.
  • Grades 4—5: Approximately half of the units (including student texts) in the 1st are different in the 2nd edition.  In these grade levels, you cannot “mix and match” the Amplify print materials available for purchase with what we offer for free download on the Core Knowledge website. We recommend that families stick with only one source for grade 4–5 CKLA instructional materials—either Amplify or Core Knowledge.

Examples of units only available on the Core Knowledge website include Brown Girl Dreaming (grade 4, unit 1) and They Call Me Güero (grade 5, unit 1).  These were created (and field tested) because it was not possible to post the corresponding (Amplify) Personal Narratives units for free download due to copyright protection. Both of these units were vetted by educators and were well received.
