Teaching, Learning, and Assessment: Meaningful Instruction

K–8 teachers, administrators
Length
2 days (6 hours/day)
Prerequisites
Schools booking this workshop will have:
- participated in Getting Started and/or Curriculum Mapping for Continuous Improvement;
- been recommended for this workshop based on the outcomes of a follow-up visit or a consultation with the Foundation regarding the school's curriculum plan and domain maps;
- accumulated the required Core Knowledge curricululm and workshop materials (as outlined in the Workshop Preliminary Form at the time of booking).

A Workshop Preliminary Form will be issued at the time of booking, outlining all required program and workshop materials.
Objectives
Day One: Components of Aligned Instruction
By the end of the first day, participants will be able to:
- name the key components that need to be aligned when planning classroom instruction;
- align given lesson components;
- state the criteria for a good objective;
- distinguish an effective objective from an ineffective objective, and other tools of planning;
- craft objectives that meet the key criteria;
- defend the value of communicating and posting objectives;
- match the strategy for assessment to the assessment type and purpose;
- apply assessment strategies that support learning; and
- craft questions for informal assessment during a lesson.
Day Two: Application
By the end of the second day, participants will be able to:
- craft criteria for success that align with the objectives and make scoring of assessments equitable;
- identify common issues in designing criteria for success;
- identify, describe, and design activities that are meaningfully related to the lesson objective;
- integrate vocabulary, language, and connections meaningfully;
- employ strategies that support sustained engagement; and
- use a provided template to apply concepts to your own lesson.
Summary
Participants will come to understand key concepts to be applied when aligning instruction, assessment, criteria for success, and meaningful activities. By hearing mini-presentations and participating in excercises, discussions, and collaborative activities, participants will be able to implement quality instructional practices that they can apply in their own classrooms.
