Summary

In his 2006 book, The Knowledge Deficit, E. D. Hirsch, Jr. stated, "Reading proficiency isn't in and of itself the magic key to competence. It's what reading enables us to learn and to do that is critical. In the information age, the key to economic and political achievement is the ability to gain new knowledge rapidly through reading and listening." In the time since these words were written, millions of dollars have been spent on research to help determine the best way to teach children to read. Despite these expenditures, progress has been slow and achievement gains often not significant.
