• An Overview of Core Knowledge; and
• Getting Started

Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

• identify and describe the components of the Common Core English Language Arts standards;
• summarize the alignment between the Core Knowledge Sequence and the Common Core English Language Arts standards;
• recognize the spiral nature of English language arts objectives in the Core Knowledge Sequence;
• describe the important of appropriate text selection for the integration of content into the language arts block;
• describe the considerations for addressing the Common Core English Language Arts standards, using the Core Knowledge Sequence; and
• identify and describe the steps required to align Common Core English Language Arts standards with supplemental programs used for English language arts instruction.

Summary

This overview workshop is intended to familiarize teachers, specialists, and administrators with the Common Core English Language Arts standards and understand how the Core Knowledge Sequence will help students meet or exceed the standards. Participants will review a detailed alignment document and discuss guidelines for implementing the standards with the Core Knowledge Sequence.
