Getting Started with the Preschool Sequence

Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • identify the basic elements of movement;
  • identify and describe the differences between free, modeled, and guided movement activities;
  • identify the movement, coordination, and music skills;
  • identify techniques for assessing movement, coordination, and music skills;
  • describe and demonstrate the "on stage" approach to movement activities that address the goals of the Preschool Sequence;
  • describe and demonstrate how to play the group games listed in the Preschool Sequence;
  • plan movement sessions that incorporate a variety of activities addressing the goals of the Preschool Sequence;
  • identify materials and activitiess that use music and sounds to increase sound awareness and discrimination;
  • sing the Core Knowledge songs; and
  • demonstrate movement activities to use in conjunction with the classical music selections of the Preschool Sequence.

Summary

This unit introduces the participant to relevant research and theory, movement and coordination activities, and methods for incorporating music into the classroom.  30% of the session consists of whole group presentations and discussion; 70% of the session focuses on small group interaction.
