Getting Started with the Preschool Sequence

Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • identify general content and process goals that should be addressed by a preschool science curriculum;
  • identify and describe the steps of the scientific reasoning process;
  • identify the science goals and objectives of the Preschool Sequence;
  • identify techniques for assessing scientific knowledge and reasoning skills;
  • identify and demonstrate understanding of the key concepts and background knowledge necessary to teach the science goals of the Preschool Sequence;
  • identify and demonstrate strategies to intorduce the "Reflect and Ask" step of the scientific reasoning process;
  • identify and demonstrate ways to have children document their observations and findings;
  • identify and demonstrate the types of language and questions to be used by the teacher during each phase of the scientific reasoning process; and
  • plan a coherent series of preschool science experiments/lessons, specifying activities and materials, on a selected science topic from the Preschool Sequence.

Summary

This unit introduces the participant to relevant research and theory, and identifies and demonstrates how to plan and teach science to preschoolers.  The course is designed to be 50% whole group presentation and discussion, and 50% small group interaction.
