Getting Started with the Preschool Sequence
Objectives
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
- summarize current research findings concerning the stages of early language development, factors influencing early development, and the correlation of language competence to future academic success;
- recognize definitions of language-related terminology;
- identify the oral language goals and objective included throughout the Preschool Sequence;
- identify techniques for assessing oral language skills;
- identify and demonstrate the following techniques to stimulate young children's language: information talk, expansion and expansion plus, open-ended questions;
- identify techniques, materials, and activities to build narrative, explanatory, and predictive language, as well as vocabulary;
- identify and describe techniques to facilitate child-to-child conversations;
- identify and describe specific strategies to use during dramatic play to build language skills; and
- identify strategies for working with English Language Learners.
Summary
This unit introduces the participant to relevant research and theory, identifies listening materials and activities, and provides the participant with a wide range of talking techniques and strategies. The course is designed to consist of 60% whole group presentation and disuccsion, and 40% small group interaction.
