Getting Started with the Preschool Sequence
Objectives
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
- summarize trends in reading achievement in NAEP data over the last ten years, as well as possible explanations for these results;
- identify critical preschool literacy experiences that lay the foundation for future success in reading;
- recognize definitions of phonological awareness and related terms;
- identify the phonological awareness goals and objectives included in the Preschool Sequence;
- identify techniques for assessing phonological awareness and letter knowledge;
- identify materials and activities using music and sounds to increase general sound awareness;
- identify children's books and related activities that play with language and build phonological awareness;
- indentify other materials and activities that build increasingly sophisticated phonological awareness skills in rhyming, blending and segmenting words, identifying initial sounds, and counting phonemes; and
- identify and demonstrate a sequence of steps, activities, and materials to teach letter names and and sounds.
Summary
This unit introduces the participant to relevant research and theory, provides critical phonological awareness activities, and provides instruction in the alphabet. The course is designed to be 50% whole group presentation and discussion, and 50% small group interaction.
