Using Children's Literature and Writing to Develop Language and Literacy Skills

Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • summarize current research regarding preschool literacy experiences, such as listening to books and read aloud and writing activities, as well as the correlation to oral language development and later success in learning to read;
  • identify the language and literacy goals and objecitves included in the Preschool Sequence;
  • identify techniques for assessing children's early literacy skills;
  • identify and demonstrate the basic steps used to teach a new nursery rhyme, poem, or fingerplay;
  • demonstrate how to clap out the beat, act out, identify rhyming words, and extend a topic/theme using nursery rhymes, poems, or fingerplays;
  • anaylze the vocabulary in children's literature selections and identify ways to teach new vocabulary;
  • identify and demonstrate the steps of the story technique in reading fiction books to preschoolers;
  • identify and demonstrate the info technique in reading nonfiction books to preschoolers;
  • plan activities to extend fiction and nonfiction selections to address oral language and literacy goals;
  • identify materials that might be included in various centers to promote literacy, as well as specific materials to be included in a writing center;
  • identify materials and activities to develop the fine motor skills needed for writing;
  • identify materials and demonstrate how to practice the Core Knowledge writing strokes;
  • describe the developmental stages of writing;
  • demonstrate how to scaffold and facilitate journal writing;
  • demonstrate how to conduct morning message and language experience activities; and
  • identify other activities and materials to increase print awareness.

Summary

This unit introduces participants to relevant research and theory, gives in-depth instruction on incorporating children's literature into the classroom, and provides the participant with skills for creating a print-rich environment. The course is designed to be 60% whole group presentation and discussion, and 40% small group interaction.
