Getting Started with the Preschool Sequence
Objectives
Upon completion of the Social Skills training, participants will be able to:
- identify the distinguishing characteristics of socially competent individuals;
- identify factors that affect social competence;
- identify the the goals and objectives for autonomy, social skills, and work habits included in the Preschool Sequence;
- identify techniques for assessing children's autonomy, social skills, and work habits;
- identify group management techniques;
- demonstrate how to give clear, simple directions, using "DO" messages;
- identify those situations in which punishment may be necessary, characteristics of effective punishment, and the limitations of punishment;
- identify the five steps of the Stop & Think approach;
- identify and demonstrate the steps (modeling, facilitating role play, and providing feedback) involved in Stop & Think to preschoolers;
- identify and demonstrate the steps in teaching social skills, such as listening, asking for help, interrupting, ignoring bad behavior, etc., using the Stop & Think approach;
- demonstrate how to use and teach "I statements" to preschoolers;
- demonstrate how to use a Peace Table for conflict resolution; and
- analyze problem behavior(s), considering all of the strategies presented during the training to develop a systematic plan to reduce or eliminate the problem behavior(s).
Summary
This unit introduces participants to relevant research and theory, identifies behavior management techniques, provides information on teaching social skills and conflict resolution to young children, and helps participants to put it all together. 40% of the course is devoted to whole group presentation and discussion; 60% is devoted to small group interactions.
