Dear Dr. Hirsch,

Happy belated birthday! I am a strong advocate of cultural literacy, and like a previous poster I am becoming a teacher later in life. I'll be 48 this year and will begin teaching elementary school in New York City this fall.

Thank you for your fine work. I will be using your books in classroom to prepare my students so they have the necessary background information to appreciate literature throughout their lives.

Perhaps one day we will meet.

Warm regards,

--Sue

Dear Dr. Hirsch:

My sister first mentioned you to me, "you know, that guy who wrote the book, Cultural Literacy". About a year later, I stumbled across your What Your ..... Needs to Know books in a bookstore one day and got immersed and bought them all. My daughter read all 6 books (What your K on up to 6th grade) when she was in about 4th grade and saw them on the bookshelf. (I hadn't used them, just had them around) She got such a great background from those books!

I actually worked with my son with What Your K Needs to Know, and we had fun. That book is currently on loan to a K teacher at present, and has been passed around to other kindergarten teachers in the past. To get my copy back, I usually have to remind the current borrower that I have another person wishing to look through it.

I called a bookstore today to buy the What Your Preschooler needs to know, because I just got certified to teach pre-K (pre-K to 3rd, but I will never go higher than pre-K, that's where my passion lies). Unfortunately, the bookstore assistant couldn't locate the book, so I found your website and have been happily downloading lesson plans for Pre-K teachers (thank you, thank you!).

Just wanted to wish you a happy belated birthday and thank you for your efforts to improve education in our country. I'm in my 50s and have just joined this effort by getting certified to teach, and am grateful for your thoughtful and practical aid and that of your organization in guiding me in the best practices for teaching my future students.

Don-

The good guy education professionals have already chimed in. Let me speak for the parent activists in reading, math and science. You were critical in crystallizing our understanding that knowledge is the key to education, and reinforcing the idea that there are methods of teaching that are truly more effective than others. Every school board candidate should be given a copy of The Schools We Need.

All the best,

Your book The Schools We Need and Why We Don't Have Them helped me survive education school and my second year of teaching. In it I found resonance and hope that there was some meaning and sense out there. As I was always in a hurry, I read it with excitement and cited it in my hurried thesis. Returning to it now, I see lots for me to learn and ponder over time. I look forward to a slow and careful reading of this and your other books.

Thank you, and happy birthday,

Diana
