Blue Ribbon School: Washington Elementary
Washington Elementary School in Rochester, Minnesota has been named a No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon School for 2007. Principal Linda Stockwell and first-grade teacher Rebecca Carlson attended an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., on November 13, where they received a plaque and a flag from the U.S. Department of Education signifying their school’s Blue Ribbon status.
The Blue Ribbon School program is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. Department of Education. It recognizes schools for high student achievement or for making dramatic gains in student achievement (for schools with high poverty enrollment). Washington earned its title by scoring in the top ten percent statewide on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments for the years 2004-2007. Washington is one of eight schools in Minnesota and 289 schools nation-wide to receive this distinction for 2007.
