The Core Knowledge Submission Format
For consistency, please try to observe the following guidelines:
- Length: 30 single-sided pages, including appendices (If possible, however, high-quality unit assessments can make the unit longer.)
- Font: Times New Roman
- Font Size: 18 point for the title at the top of page 1, 11 point for all other text. (Use 12 if you don’t have 11.)
- Margins: one inch on all sides
- Tab Sets: every .5 inches
- Footer: “2008 Core Knowledge® National Conference, Unit Title/Presentation Title, Grade Level/Strand, Page Number” in 10pt font
- Preferred Word Processing Programs: Microsoft Word. (If you use another program, please save your final file in Microsoft Word format.)
- Preferred format: IBM
New: 2-page Outline/Overview Handout
Each unit presentation must include a 2-page outline/overview handout of the unit. Your handout will be included in a handout notebook that we will distribute to registered attendees and which will also include blank pages for the attendee to take notes during the sessions. The handout notebook replaces the handouts that were traditionally provided during conference sessions.
Appendices
The pages should include the name of the Appendix at the top of each page. (See Model Presentations and Units for an example.) In order to include your appendices with your submission, please scan them and include them in the same word processing program you used to type your submission.
Copyrighted Materials
Please do not include any materials from copyrighted items such as books and magazines unless you have written permission to do so. This includes student worksheets, maps, clip art, and photographs. A good rule of thumb for determining whether something is copyrighted is the 75-year rule: anything published within the last 75 years is likely to be under copyright and should not be used without written permission from the publisher (even if it is out of print!). When requesting permission, be sure to tell the publisher that copies of submission will be distributed and sold at the cost of duplication. The Foundation will need a photocopy of the written permission.
If you include any student artwork in your unit, you must include a parental permission to reprint form for every image. Provide the child’s parent/guardian with the form and a photocopy of the image. Return the form and photocopy to the Core Knowledge Foundation, along with your permission to reprint form, by June 2, 2008. If you do not include a parental permission to reprint form and student artwork is included in your unit, we will remove that artwork for reproduction on the conference CD, but you may still include the artwork in your presentation at the conference.
If you don’t have copyright permission, but a particular page is important to your lesson, please write a detailed bibliographic entry including the title of the publication, author, publisher, ISBN number and page number(s) so others can find it. For example:
Palumbo, T. Integrating Literature. Carthage, IL: Good Apple, 1991. 0-86653-610-8, p. 37.
If you are unsure about the copyright status of your material is, it is best NOT to include it. You may show it on an overhead and distribute it at your session.
