- If you are hosting a website, please link to our HTML pages, not to the PDF lesson plan. We are very proud of our lesson plans, and they take quite a lot of bandwidth to host, so we prefer to make clear to our users who in fact is hosting them. If we have given you express permission to link directly to our lesson plans, your visitors will be able to open them directly on your website.
- Yes, we do have a scope and sequence. It is called the Core Knowledge Sequence, and it covers grades K-8. We also have a Preschool Sequence.
- The Sequence is an essential document for any Core Knowledge teacher or school. The Core Knowledge Sequence provides a detailed outline of specific knowledge to be taught in grades K-8 in language arts, American and world history, geography, visual arts, music, math, and science. The content specified in the Sequence complements the general skills and objectives typically found in state and local curriculum guides. An introductory essay discusses the research and consensus-building efforts behind the Sequence and describes the basic steps of implementing a Core Knowledge school program.
- We are very excited to present our newest tool for implementing the Core Knowledge Sequence: the Day-by-Day Planner. Please read about our innovative software and tour it with our web demo.
- The series books were published in the early '90s, before the Sequence was finalized. We are in the process of revising the series books to match the current Sequence. Revised books are available through Grade 6.
- At the present time, we have no plans to publish 7th or 8th grade volumes of the Core Knowledge Series. There is a lot more content to cover in the middle school grades; we need additional funding to produce those books.
- Please read Dr. Matthew Davis' excellent essay, "After Core Knowledge".
- There are no plans to create a curriculum guideline through high school at this time. Core Knowledge was developed to provide a basis for higher education. A student who has completed K–8th grade in a Core Knowledge school should be ready for any good high school program.
- We can provide you with a list of schools that implement Core Knowledge in grades K–8 and then also offer a curriculum that "builds on Core Knowledge" in the high school years. You might consider modeling your curricula after theirs, or at least consulting with them. Please realize that these schools' high school curriculum was not developed and has not been reviewed by the Core Knowledge Foundation, but rather is each school's interpretation of what an extension of the K–8 curriculum might look like. The Foundation's goal is to create opportunities for you to network and share ideas with other schools, but not to endorse any particular school's high school program as we have not reviewed their curriculum.
- We recommend that schools interested in high school look into the International Baccalaureate or the Advanced Placement programs.
- The Realms of Gold Series has three volumes. Volume I is for 6th grade, II is for 7th grade, and III is for 8th grade. All the shorter literary works poems, stories, essays, speeches, and autobiographical excerpts specified in the Core Knowledge Sequence for Grades 6–8 are conveniently anthologized in these three grade-level volumes. Each volume also includes additional classic works in each genre, offering students handy supplemental texts from the world's greatest writers. Key speeches from the 20th century make volumes 2 and 3 useful for history teachers, too. Click here for more information.
- The most recent publication dates for all of our What Your _ Grader Needs to Know books are listed below:
-
PreK
2008 K1996 11997 (Revised) 21998 (Revised) 32001 (Revised) 42004 (Revised) 52005 (Revised) 62006 (Revised) - What Your Preschooler Needs to Know was published as a paperback by Delta, a subsidiary of Random House, on March 25, 2008. There is no plan to revise the Kindergarten edition, since that was developed after the Sequence was revised. There are no plans for a 7th or 8th grade edition at this time, owing to the greater cost of content research and validation that would be required for these publications.
- You can learn more about the Core Knowledge Series on our website click here.
- Most of our materials are geared for English speakers; however, a grant from the Brown Foundation has enabled Core Knowledge to translate some of the books in the Grader series into Spanish. The aim is to provide supplements to the original books to help children read and learn from the corresponding English-language volume. You can download the translations in PDF format here, at no cost.

- Many schools and parents make use of trade books and other resources. Books to Build On is an annotated list of resources organized by topics from the Core Knowledge Sequence. Our website includes Resources to Build On, a fully searchable online database that lists books, videos, and other publications organized by Sequence topic, grade level, and reading level. These references can be helpful in planning lessons, building a school library, or helping children at home.
- Additionally, we can refer you to book vendors that can assist your school in developing its library.
- Resources to Build On is a searchable database of books and other resources for teaching Core Knowledge. In an effort to provide a list of independent products and publications that relate to topics in the Core Knowledge Sequence, our resource coordinator screens a wide variety of publications to find items that may be useful to Core Knowledge teachers, librarians, parents, and students. Although a listing in the Resources to Build On database does not make a title an “official” Core Knowledge book, these references can be helpful in planning lessons, building a school library, or helping children at home. We now list more than 1,000 books. Please click here to access Resources to Build On.
- Our songbook, A Joyful Noise, is available. There is some sheet music in the Teacher Handbook Text Resources. You can also find sheet music, lyrics, and recordings of many of the songs listed in the Sequence at www.sheetmusic.com and www.kididdles.com/mouseum.
