Experience it! A conference filled with education, entertainment and enjoyment — February 23–25, 2006!

Teacher and entertainer extraordinaire Bill Nye the Science Guy will highlight the 15th Core Knowledge National Conference in 2006. Star of the new PBS show “Eyes of Nye,” Bill Nye makes education active, engaging, and compelling for students of all ages. Mr. Nye will enlighten and entertain conference attendees as the keynote speaker at the complimentary luncheon on Friday, February 24.

Science isn’t the only focus of the conference. Reading takes center stage on Thursday, February 23 when reading experts from across North America share the latest advances in reading research. Connie Juel will discuss phonics and vocabulary, and Bennett and Sally Shaywitz will talk about assessing and treating problem readers in a classroom setting. Reading comprehension and the impact reading has on verbal intelligence will be examined by Joe Torgesen and Keith Stanovich. E. D. Hirsch, Jr. will introduce his ideas about reading at Thursday’s plenary session and will discuss his new book, The Knowledge Deficit.

A great teacher knows a lot. And Friday sessions help good teachers become great! You can get your fill of math, history, geography, and the arts on Friday, February 24 with scholars, experts, and authors from across the country. How Much is a Million author David Schwartz, technology expert Sheila Gersh, and historians from the National Park Service will join astronomer Alex Filippenko, mathematics expert Frank Wang and a host of subject-area experts to strengthen your knowledge base.

Experience the frontier of the American Southwest on Saturday, February 25. Explore the Spanish missions trail, shop at a Mexican “mercado” or market, or feel the spirit of the Alamo. Tours leaving the Marriott Rivercenter will provide you with an afternoon filled with fun, facts and a feeling for San Antonio that you’ll take back home with you. The price and itinerary of each tour is available at www.coreknowledge.org/conference .

It all takes place in San Antonio, home to plenty of authentic southwestern culture and entertainment. Spend an evening unwinding at the nearby River Walk, where you can enjoy bistro dining, boutique shopping, and even barge riding!
